Gretchen Zimmermann

Gretchen Zimmermann is a writer, journalist, and cultural advocate whose work focuses on arts, community life, and civic accountability in Vallejo. She founded the Vallejo Arts & Entertainment website and later joined the Vallejo Sun, where she began covering arts and culture listings before expanding into in-depth and investigative reporting.

After spending years moving throughout the inner San Francisco Bay Area, Gretchen settled in Vallejo in 2002. That stability allowed her to become deeply engaged in local creative and civic life. She first became involved through arts organizations, volunteering with Vallejo Open Studios and Vallejo Art Walk. As her relationships within the community deepened, her interests expanded into local politics, public process, and governance.

Seeking to better understand—and meaningfully report on—the systems shaping her city, Gretchen pursued formal training in journalism, committing herself to careful research, public accountability, and long-form investigative work. Her writing helps illuminate the intersections between art, culture, policy, and everyday life in Vallejo.

At Mare Island Art Studios, Gretchen serves as Treasurer, supporting the financial health and sustainability of the studios. Her background in journalism, community engagement, and organizational stewardship plays a key role in helping MIAS remain transparent, resilient, and community-centered.
